Cutters Win Fourth Straight
The Crosscutters used an eleven hit attack to defeat the Vermont Lake Monsters in the opening game of a 3-game series Wednesday night at Susquehanna Bank Park at Bowman Field 7-5.
The Cutters opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a lead-off triple from Cord Sandberg. He was followed three batters later by Derek Campbell who drew a two out walk.
Matt Shortall began his big night of pacing the Cutters offense with an RBI single on the infield scoring Sandberg making it 1-0 Cutters.
Cambell was then balked home by Lake Monsters starting pitcher Cristhian Jose Perez (1-1) to put the Cutters up 2-0.
Rhys Hoskins then sent a double into the gap in left center field plating Shortall to make it 3-0.
In the second inning, four consecutive hits plated two runs and put the Cutters up 5-0 after two innings. Marrerro doubled, Sandberg singled, Marrero was thrown out at the plate, Tromp followed with a double putting two on in scoring position and Brown delivered a 2-run single into right field.
Derek Campbell, who was named the Phillies Minor League Player of the Week before the game, stayed red hot at the plate with a two out double in the fifth inning. Shortall then singled him home to make it 6-1 Cutters after five innings.
Cutters starting pitcher David Whitehead (2-1) had another solid outing pitching into the sixth inning allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out three.
After Cutters reliever Bryan Sova gave up a run in the seventh, he then retired Joe Bennie to end the inning beginning a streak of seven consecutive batters retired by the Cutters bullpen.
Shortall would cap his huge night with an RBI double scoring Tromp who singled to lead off the seventh inning, making the final 7-5 Cutters.
Frank Rivas had a spotless eighth inning and Delvi Francisco locked down his first save as a Cutter in 2014 with a perfect ninth inning.
The Crosscutters improve to 15-11 and are the hottest team in the New York Penn League right now.
Williamsport continues its 6-game home stand with game #2 of the series with the Vermont Lake Monsters Thursday night at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field. The Cutters host the Tri-City Valley Cats from Saturday through Monday.
