May 28, 2006
The Hickory Crawdads and the Hagerstown Suns engaged in a pitching duel Sunday afternoon at L.P. Frans Stadium with the Crawdads winning 2-1.

Hickory starter Todd Redmond (5-3) pitched brilliantly. In his 6 2/3 innings of work, Redmond only allowed four hits, one hit batsman, and one walk, striking out six.

Hagerstown starter Bobby Parnell (0-3) , a native of Salisbury, MD, also pitched well giving up two runs on five hits. Parnell walked one batter, strking out seven.

The bullpens for both teams pitched stellar as well. Brandon Nall pitched two innings of two hit ball for Hagerstown, while Hickory relievers Dave Davidson and Justin Vaclavik closed out the final 2 2/3 innings with only one hit and one walk allowed striking out five Sun hitters. Vaclavik picked up his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Hickory's two runs came in the fourth inning. With one out, Andrew McCutchen singled to right center. After a Mike Carlin groundout, Brad Corley singled through the middle. Jason Delaney brought McCutchen in with a single to left. The inning ended on a Steve Lerud hit, scoring Corley just ahead of the third out made at third base by Delaney.

Hagerstown's only run of the game came on a Nick Evans home run in the seventh inning off of Redmond. The Suns would get two others runners aboard in the seventh before Elvis Cruz struck out ending the inning. The Suns never challenged the lead after the seventh. Other than the home run, only one other Hagerstown runner reached third base on the afternoon.

The two teams continue their four game series on Monday at 6:30pm in Hickory. NOTES: After a stretch on seven consecutive games with at least two errors, Hickory has now played two in a row without committing an error.
