July 16, 2014

The Staten Island Yankees (16-16) returned to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George following a six-game road trip with a bang on Wednesday night, defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters (17-15), 7-3.

The Baby Bombers were first to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Catcher Luis Torrens, 2-for-3, hit a double, followed by a Ty McFarland single to put the score at 1-0.

The Crosscutters answered in the top of the second inning, plating all three of their runs in the inning off Staten Island starter Luis Niebla. Williamsport's Derek Campbell started the inning with a double, followed by a Matt Shortall single. With two runners on base, Rhys Hoskins doubled to tie the ball game. Deivi Grullon then put the Crosscutters in the lead with a two-RBI single to put the score at 3-1.

Staten Island got one run back in the bottom half of the second with Vicente Conde kicking things off with a walk and a stolen base. Nathan Mikolas followed with a single putting two runners on base for Renzo Martini. The third baseman plated the Yankees second run of the game, hitting a single to bring home Conde.

Trailing by one run in the bottom of the fourth, Baby Bomber first baseman Connor Spencer singled followed by a double from Mikolas, his second hit of the game. Devyn Bolasky gave Staten Island the permanent lead when the center fielder doubled down the left field line to bring home Spencer and Mikolas.

With Justin Kamplain (W, 1-0) on the mound in relief, the Yankees didn't look back. The lefty threw four shutout innings, allowing only one hit, striking out six batters.

Staten Island added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Torrens started the inning for the Baby Bombers with a single followed by a double from McFarland. Chris Breen then drew a walk to load the bases for Austin Aune. Aune singled to bring home Torrens, and Conde kept the scoring alive with another single to plate McFarland. With no outs, Spencer grounded into a double play to bring home Breen for the Yankees' final run of the game.
