Ciriaco comes through for Mobile

May 29, 2006
Juan Ciriaco's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Mobile over Birmingham, 2-1, on Monday.

Peter Ciofrone started the decisive rally with a one-out single to left field. He moved to second on a passed ball and Matt Lauderdale walked before Ciriaco lined a single into left to end it.

Paul Abraham (1-3) picked up the victory after replacing Geoffrey Jones with one out and one on in the ninth. He allowed a single to Rob Sasser before getting Micah Schnurstein to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Mobile starter Jared Wells pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits. Stephen Smitherman hit his third home run of the season and Kennard Jones went 2-for-4 for the BayBears (21-30), who have won four straight.

Michael Myers went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Birmingham (22-30), which lost its fourth in a row.

Barons reliever Brian West (1-4) took the loss, retiring one batter in the ninth before surrendering Ciriaco's game-winning hit.--Chip Haunss/MLB.com
