July 20, 2014

Behind a complete game effort from starter Mitch Atkins, the Mississippi Braves won Sunday's series finale against the Birmingham Barons by a score of 5-1 in front of 5,142 fans at Regions Field.

Mississippi took a 1-0 lead against Barons starter Myles Jaye (1-9, 6.59) in the first inning on an RBI double by Kyle Wren. Wren helped extend the lead to 4-0 two innings later with another RBI double while Jose Peraza's RBI triple and a run scoring base hit by Rich Poythress capped the scoring in the inning. Jaye allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out four over 6.0 innings pitched.

The runs were more than enough for Atkins (5-0, 4.11) who baffled the Barons throughout the game, surrendering just three hits over the first 8.0 innings. Rangel Ravelo provided the lone Barons run with a booming solo home run in the seventh inning. The long ball was his seventh on the season, matching his career total from four professional seasons prior to 2014.

Christian Marrero finished with two of the Barons' five hits on the afternoon finishing 2-for-4. The loss snapped the Barons three game winning streak while dropping them to 44-54 on the season and 15-13 in the second half. With the win, Mississippi improved to 55-44 on the year and 16-14 in the second half.

The Barons head back onto the road for a five game series against the Suns in Jacksonville starting Monday. The Barons will send LHP Scott Snodgress (5-7, 4.14) to the hill in game one against a Suns starter TBA. First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 6:05 PM CDT.
