Caleb Clay Named PCL Pitcher of the Week
SALT LAKE CITY (July 21, 2014) - The Pacific Coast League announced today that Salt Lake Bees starting pitcher Caleb Clay has been named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 14-20.
Clay held Las Vegas, the PCL's top scoring team, in check for a full nine innings Sunday in Salt Lake's 3-0 victory over the 51s. The right-hander became the first Bees' pitcher to toss a complete-game shutout since Barry Enright accomplished the feat on July 31, 2012. Clay limited Las Vegas to three hits and one walk in his 101-pitch outing. The 26-year-old also tallied six strikeouts and retired the first seven batters he faced in the game. The win moved Clay's record to 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA in five starts since arriving in Salt Lake on June 21 from the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization.
The Pitcher of the Week accolade is the second of his career and his first since he threw his only other complete-game shutout on June 1, 2013, for the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League. Clay is in his first season with the Los Angeles Angels organization. The right-hander from Birmingham, Alabama was originally drafted in the first round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Boston Red Sox.
This is the 23rd time a Salt Lake pitcher has been given the honor since the franchise moved to the Beehive State in 1994 and the first since Eric Junge and Matt Palmer took home the award in back-to-back weeks in May of 2011. Included among the previous Salt Lake PCL Pitchers of the Week are LaTroy Hawkins, who won the award three times between 1994 and 1997, Eddie Guardado, Jered Weaver and Sean O'Sullivan.
The Salt Lake Bees continue their homestand on Monday night starting a four-game series with the Reno Aces. Tickets are still available for the July 23 and July 24 Pioneer Days postgame fireworks shows at www.slbees.com, by calling (801) 325-BEES, or in person at Smith's Tix locations and the Smith's Ballpark box office.
