Kohl Stewart placed on 7-day DL
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that RHP Kohl Stewart has been placed on the 7-day disabled list and that LHP Stephen Gonsalves and LHP Josue Montanez will join the Kernels from Elizabethton (APPY). Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.
The Twins selected Gonsalves in the fourth round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of Cathedral Catholic (CA) HS. He split time last season between the GCL Twins and Elizabethton and had made six starts at Elizabethton this season, posting a 2-0 record and 2.79 ERA. In 29 IP, he allowed 23 hits and 12 runs (nine earned) with 10 walks and 26 strikeouts.
The Twins selected Montanez in the 15th round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft and he began the 2014 season with the Kernels. He was assigned to Elizabethton on June 19th. In 16 games for the Kernels (six starts) he posted a 1-4 record and 7.89 ERA. In 10 appearances at Elizabethton, he has a 2-2 record and 3.60 ERA, allowing 17 hits and eight runs (six earned) with four walks and 21 strikeouts in 15 IP.
Stewart goes on the DL with a right shoulder impingement. The Twins first round (fourth overall) pick in the 2013 First Year Player Draft, he made 17 starts for the Kernels, posting a 3-5 record and 2.42 ERA. In 81.2 IP, he allowed 69 hits and 33 runs (22 earned) with 23 walks and 53 strikeouts.
Gonsalves and Montanez are active and available for tonight's 7:05 pm game at Bowling Green. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at 25 active players, with six players currently on the DL.
The Kernels continue a six game road trip tonight at 7:05 pm against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. They return home to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, July 29th for a three game series against the Burlington Bees.
