Big 5th Inning Keys Dragons 5-2 Win

Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons scored five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-2 on Friday night before a crowd of 8,487 at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons snapped a four-game losing streak with the win and avoided a sweep of the three-game series with Quad Cities.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (9-5) pitched out of two bases-loaded jams to keep the River Bandits off the scoreboard over the first five innings. Quad Cities loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and then put three men on base with no one out in the fifth, but Travieso was able to work out of trouble both times. Travieso left after five innings, allowing three hits and no runs with five walks and five strikeouts.

Alejandro Chacin worked the final two innings to earn his 11th save. He struck out four while allowing two hits but no runs.

The Dragons five-run rally started when Carlton Daal lined a double to left field with one out in the fifth. Nick Benedetto followed with a double to left to drive in Daal and give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. After Jamodrick McGruder walked, Jonathan Reynoso bounced a single off the second baseman into center field to drive in Benedetto and move McGruder to third. Tanner Rahier lined a single to center to drive in two more runs, and Rahier scored on Phillip Ervin's double over the head to the center fielder to make it 5-0.

Quad Cities scored two runs in the sixth to pull to within two at 5-2, but they could not sustain a rally the rest of the night.

The Dragons finished with 10 hits. Rahier, Ervin, and Daal each had two hits. 

The Dragons (15-18) open a new three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (17-15) on Saturday at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m.   Jackson Stephens (2-2, 4.10) will start the game for the Dragons against Cedar Rapids' Chih-Wei Hu (2-0, 2.00). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372).
