Doubledays down Jammers behind Dickey
AUBURN, NY - Washington Nationals fourth-round draft pick Robbie Dickey tossed four near-flawless innings, and the Doubledays won their fourth in six tries, solidly defeating the Jamestown Jammers 3-1 on Sunday at Falcon Park.
Dickey showed why the Nationals thought so highly of him coming out of college. The 6-foot-3 righty was dominant from the get-go, retiring 12 of the 14 Jammers that came to the plate. He scattered two soft hits and fanned two without walking a batter. He was relieved by Mario Sanchez (3-0), who picked up the win while allowing the Jammers' lone run of the ballgame, a solo homer by Taylor Gushue in the seventh.
Auburn's bats came to play once again. After knocking rehabbing Triple-A starter Jake Brigham out of the game, the Doubledays scored three in the fifth against originally-scheduled starter Marek Minarik. Jeff Gardner walked to lead off the frame, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Cody Gunter single to get the Doubledays on the board with a 1-0 lead.
Clay Williamson reached on an error to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Osvaldo Abreu bunted Gunter and Williamson over, Cutter Dykstra was hit by a pitch, and Jose Marmolejos knocked a sacrifice fly to center to score Gunter and push Williamson to third. Raudy Read stepped up and delivered a monster double to left that scored Williamson and put the Doubledays up 3-0.
The Doubledays continue their three-game set with the Jammers on Monday night at Falcon Park. RHP Anderson Martinez returns to Auburn after five dominant outings for the GCL Nationals in which he went 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA. He's opposed by Jamestown RHP Tyler Eppler (0-2, 4.08).
