Chiefs Get One-Hit in 4-0 Loss

Arturo Reyes tosses a team-best ninth quality start

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs could only manage one hit, a first-inning single by Juan Herrera, against the Great Lakes Loons in a 4-0 loss on Monday morning. The Chiefs split the homestand with a 3-3 record and are 20-16 in the second half and 57-48 overall.

   The Loons scored their first run in the second inning against Chiefs starter Arturo Reyes. Josmar Cordero led off the inning with a double and Alex Santana singled moving Cordero to third. Cordero scored on a RBI groundout by Webster Rivas for the Loons first lead of the series. Spencer Navin singled to right fielder Ronald Castillo who misplayed the ball, allowing Santana to score and Navin to reach third. Brandon Trinkwon plated Navin with a RBI double, capping a three-run inning for the Loons. The Loons added to their lead after Steve Sabatino gave up a bases loaded walk to Cordero in the ninth to make it 4-0.

   Reyes got into trouble early, but settled down. Reyes retired 12 of the next 15 batters he faced after the second inning. Reyes worked around a runner on second with one out in the third by getting a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Chiefs within striking distance.

   Reyes (6-7) allowed three runs off seven hits, walked one, and struck out seven in six innings of work. Kyle Barraclough walked two and struck out one in an inning of work. Jhonny Polanco allowed one run off one hit, walked three, and struck out two over an inning and a third. Sabatino walked two and struck out one over 2/3 innings pitched.

Notes: The Chiefs got one-hit for the first time since May 16, 2013 against Kane County in a seven-inning game…The last time the Chiefs were one-hit in a nine-inning game was May 18, 2010 at Wisconsin…The Chiefs got shutout for the first time since June 1 against Kane County…It was the first 1-0 loss since May 5 against Beloit…The Chiefs have been shutout ten times and have been a part of 20 shutouts, both Midwest League highs…The Chiefs finish 10-13 against the Eastern Division…Chiefs relievers walked seven over three innings…Reyes threw his team-best ninth quality start… The Chiefs fall to 33-20 at home and 11-14 in day games…The Chiefs had the fewest hits in a game of the entire season…Chiefs fall to 12-13 in July… Barraclough got his first pickoff of the season…The Chiefs start a six-game road trip beginning with a three-game set in Beloit Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.…RHP Alex Reyes (6-6, 4.03) is on the mound for the Chiefs while Beloit has yet to name their starter…The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m., on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
