Dominant arms halt Mavs bats in Desert

Velasquez and Hader combine on four-hitter in series opener
July 29, 2014

ADELANTO, Calif. - Vince Velasquez returned from the disabled list and combined with Josh Hader to beat the High Desert Mavericks, 7-2, on Monday night at Heritage Field.

Velasquez (5-1), making his first start with the JetHawks since May 9, allowed two runs on two hits over five innings of work to pick up the win. The right-hander struck out two and issued one walk. Velasquez missed extended time with a groin injury and had been rehabbing in the Gulf Coast League before rejoining the JetHawks on Monday.

Lancaster (63-44) started the scoring in the second inning when Jack Mayfield lined a two-run double to left field. Mayfield finished the night 3-for-3 and added a solo home run while driving in three runs and scoring three runs.

Chan Moon added a sac-fly in the second inning to give the JetHawks a 3-0 lead against starter Jake Zokan (1-1).

Roberto Peña hit a solo shot in the third inning to make it a 4-0 lead.

The Mavericks (51-56) picked up two runs in the third inning. Travis Witherspoon hit a solo homer before Zach Shank tripled down the left field line. He scored on a Tyler Smith groundout to cut the JetHawks lead in half.

Hader tossed the final four innings to pick up his second save of the season. The lefty struck out five, walked one and allowed two singles. He dropped his league-leading ERA to 2.36.

Mayfield hit his homer in the sixth inning and Lancaster added two more in the ninth. Tanner Mathis scored on a wild pitch and Mayfield came home on a Bryan Brito error.

The clubs continue the series with the second of three games on Tuesday night at Heritage Field. Evan Grills and Brian Holmes are scheduled to pitch for the JetHawks. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
