Tyler Cloyd no-hits Louisville
COLUMBUS, OH- The Columbus Clippers (59-53) no-hit the Louisville Bats (54-58) in a 13-0 win Wednesday night. Tyler Cloyd had a perfect game through eight innings, allowed a hit by pitch, but bounced back with a doubleplay ball and clinched the no-no on a liner to second baseman Audy Ciriaco.
Cloyd (9-5, 3.91 ERA) pitched his team high 10th quality start and the first nine inning no-hitter for Columbus since 2011. He allowed one hit batter and struck out six in the no-hitter.
Columbus could've stopped batting after the first. Jesus Aguilar plated a pair of runs on a double and extended his hit streak to a season-best 10.
Giovanny Urshela then gave the Clippers a two-run inning in the third with a no-doubter to left that scored a pair. His 52 RBI with Columbus and 19 with Akron gives him 71 on the season, most in the Indians system.
The Clippers had a five run inning in the seventh and four more in the eighth. Aguilar, Urshela and Luke Carlin each homered in the win.
With Louisville's loss the Clippers extended their IL West lead to two and one-half games, a season high.
The no-hitter came on 88 pitches by Cloyd, 59 strikes. The no-hitter was the first nine inning feat at Huntington Park.
Game two will be a 7:05 p.m. first pitch between Columbus and Louisville at Huntington Park. Josh Tomlin (2-1, 2.06 ERA) will pitch for the Clippers against Dylan Axelrod (6-8, 4.52 ERA) and the Bats Thursday.
