July 30, 2014

After dropping five out of six games on the road, the Staten Island Yankees (23-23) opened their six-game home stand in thrilling fashion on Wednesday night, defeating Boston Red Sox affiliate, the Lowell Spinners (19-27), 5-4.

Former New York Yankees first round pick Ty Hensley made his Staten Island debut, and the Spinners shook the fresh Baby Bomber arm up in the first inning. Lowell's Joseph Monge reached after being hit by a pitch, then stole second to get in scoring position. The Spinners' Sam Travis drove Monge in on a single to right field, then advanced to second as Jordan Betts took a base on balls. Mauricio Dubon brought home the second run on a base hit to right field.

The Baby Bombers were able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the third as Daniel Lopez walked, then stole second, putting himself in scoring position. Ty McFarland drove home the first run for the Yankees with a single to left field.

Newly added lefty Andrew Chin made his debut with Staten Island as he entered the game in the third, then tossed 1.1 innings without allowing a run.

The Spinners increased their lead in the sixth inning off Yankee reliever Conor Mullee. Lowell's Mike Meyers started the inning with a single, then advanced to second on a ground out by catcher Jordan Procyshen. Cisco Tellez plated Meyers on double to right field and was able to cross home plate on an RBI bunt by Deiner Lopez.

Down by three runs with only six outs to give, the Baby Bombers came storming back. Lopez started the inning by reaching on an error by the shortstop Dubon. Luis Torrens brought home Lopez on a double to right field causing the Spinners to bring in New York-Penn saves leader Carlos Pinales (L, 0-1). McFarland slapped a single to right field followed by an Isaias Tejeda double that brought home Torrens. With runners on second and third, Pinales intentionally walked Chris Breen to load the bases for Vicente Conde who singled to tie the ball game. The Baby Bombers took the lead as Renzo Martini hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field, bringing home Tejeda.

Sam Agnew-Wieland (W, 2-4) shut down the Spinners in the final three frames to earn his second win of the season after tossing three innings of one-hit ball.

The teams will be back in action Thursday night as Costume Week at Richmond County Bank Ballpark continues with a special appearance from Sgt. Slaughter at 7 p.m.
