Indians Lose Battle of First-Half Champions
SPOKANE, Wash., -- The Spokane Indians fell to the Hillsboro Hops 9-1 .in front of 4,765 fans at Avista Stadium. It was Dollars in Your Dog Night, presented by Mirabeau Park Hotel and NOW 105.7.
Starter Richelson Pena (4-3) took the loss after giving up a season-high five earned runs. Two runs came in the second, and the rest came off a Zach Esquerra three-run home run to put the game out of reach. Pena came into the game with the league's seventh-best ERA (2.84), but saw the number rise to 3.40. He finished with a season-high eight strikeouts, giving him 44 on the season.
Fernando Vivili put the Indians on the board in the seventh with a double that scored Pepe Cardona.
Spokane's best opportunity came in the fourth inning, down 2-0, when Jose Trevino singled up the middle. Luke Tendler followed with a long double to put runners on second and third with one out. Juremi Profar and Cardona flied out consecutively.
Erik Swanson came on in the seventh inning and allowed three runs. Luis Pollorena allowed one run in the eighth and Kevin Matthews tossed a scoreless ninth.
