Diamond shines, Bats win 5-1
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville starter Scott Diamond shined bright as the Bats defeated the Red Wings 5-1 on Monday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
Facing his old team was left-hander, Diamond (1-1, 5.62) pitched seven and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball, allowed eight hits, walked zero, and struck out three. He earned his first win of the season with the Bats in his fourth try. He becomes the second Bats starting pitcher since July 6, to get a win.
The Red Wings got a base runner in each of the first four innings, but Diamond was able to keep them from denting the plate. He was able to shutout his opponent while on the mound for the first time this season. His previous season low for runs in a game was one, on two different occasions.
Jason Bourgeois creeps closer to the all-time hit record as he had two more knocks. He lead off the game with a double, his one hundred and twenty-fifth hit of the season, and the one-thousandth hit of the season for the Bats as a team. He recorded his thirty-seventh multi-hit game of the season in the process. That is the most by a Bats player since Zack Cozart had forty in 2010.
Right-hander Trevor May got the ball for the Red Wings. He pitched six plus innings, allowed four runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out two. He fell to 8-6 on the season and saw his ERA rise to 2.93.
Insurance runs were added in the seventh and eighth innings for the Bats. Neftali Soto singled in Hernan Iribarren in the seventh innings and Iribarren singled in Bryan Anderson in the eighth inning for all the final runs of the game.
Fabio Castillo entered the game in the ninth and allowd his first run of the season with Louisville. He went nine and one-third innings of scoreless baseball with the Bats before the run allowed tonight. He has retired the first batter that he has faced in each of his outings for Louisville.
Louisville (57-60) and Rochester (63-53) will meet for the last time in the regular season tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Dylan Axelrod (0-1, 3.86) will look for his first win facing off with brand new Red Wing Tommy Milone (NR). He came to Twins organization in a trade at the deadline that sent outfielder Sam Fuld to Oakland.
