Mud Hens to wear 'Crawford' jerseys this Saturday
Toledo's deep connection with America's pastime will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9, on Toledo Baseball History Night, presented by Perry Pro Tech. On that night a focus will be placed on the 1939 Toledo Crawfords, as this is the 75th anniversary of the team playing at Swayne Field in the Negro American League.
Mud Hens players and coaches will be wearing special throwback "Crawford" jerseys, which will be sold during an in-game silent auction, with proceeds to benefit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
Get to Saturday's game early, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a commemorative poster featuring three former Crawford players, courtesy of The Blade
The Crawfords relocated from Pittsburgh that year, and a famous 2-game series was played in September, 1939, which pitted former Crawford Satchel Paige and his all-star team against the Crawfords. Team V.P. Jesse Owens also took part in an exhibition race prior to a Crawfords game that year.
A traveling exhibit, "Times, Teams & Talent", will be at Fifth Third Field on August 9, provided by the Negro League Baseball Museum. The 24' long mobile exhibit is a showcase of Negro League Baseball history.
