Frias Makes Big League Debut

Joins Baez, Patterson as Quakes to get the call this year
August 5, 2014

Los Angeles, CA - Former Quake Carlos Frias made his major league debut in the Dodgers' loss to the Angels on Monday night at Chavez Ravine. He became the third Quake this year and the eighth in the Dodger era (since 2011) to debut in the bigs.

Frias was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday to take the roster spot of Chris Perez, who was placed on the disabled list with bone spurs in his right foot. He entered Monday night's contest in relief of Zack Greinke. After giving up a leadoff single to Albert Pujols, Frias retired the next six men he faced. He struck out a pair in two scoreless innings.

The righty from the Dominican Republic pitched in parts of 2011, 2012 and 2013 with the Quakes. He was most effective last season, posting a 4.11 ERA in eight starts with Rancho. In 46 innings, he struck out 48 while walking just 11.

Frias had split the 2014 campaign between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Albuquerque before getting the call. In 20 starts, Frias is 10-5 with a 4.58 earned run average in the minors this season.

He joins fellow pitchers Red Patterson and Pedro Baez as former Quakes to debut with the Dodgers this year. Patterson pitched 4.2 innings in a start for the Dodgers on May 1 while Baez has made a pair of relief appearances. In the Dodger era (since 2011), eight former Rancho players have gone on to break into the bigs with Los Angeles.
