June 6, 2006
Scott Mathieson pitched eight innings and homered as Reading edged visiting Binghamton, 4-3, on Tuesday.

Mathieson plated Tim Moss in the fourth inning with a two-run shot that gave Reading a 3-1 advantage. The 6-foot-3 right-hander surrendered three runs on eight hits, striking out eight and issuing a pair of walks. The 22-year-old Vancouver, BC, native lowered his ERA to 3.01.

Moss' two-out solo blast broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth and put Mathieson (6-2) in position to win his third consecutive start. The homer capped off a 4-for-4 night for Moss, who hit three singles and scored three runs to help the Phillies (24-32) win their third straight.

Reading reliever Chris Key struck out two while tossing a perfect ninth to get his second save as the Phillies won for the ninth time in their last 12 games.

Binghamton reliever Orlando Roman (2-2) gave up the homer to Moss while recording two outs in the eighth to take the loss. Starter Miguel Perez yielded three runs on eight hits in six innings, fanning five and walking two. Eddie Camacho blanked Reading for 1 1/3 innings.
