The Annual Rite Of Summer In Aberdeen: The Cal Ripken World Series

August 8, 2014

Hundreds of young, talented baseball teams from around the world started the 2013-2014 season sharing one goal, but only 18 of those teams survived and advanced to the Cal Ripken World Series.

Entering its twelfth season in Aberdeen, the Ripken World Series is an event unlike any other in the world. This year's World Series will feature two new international teams, Puerto Rico and New Zealand, a world record breaking event, and plenty of young, talented baseball players from around the world.

Lauren Morris, the Cal Ripken World Series event coordinator, eagerly awaits the week long tournament which begins August 8th. The Ripken staff has put together several fun and entertaining events for the 2014 edition of the World Series. "The coolest event we are putting on this year will take place during the opening ceremony as we'll try to break the world record for most bubbles blown simultaneously," said Morris. The week long tournament will also feature a miniature water park in center field at Cal Senior's Yard, an international dance extravaganza, the Under Armour Futures Game, which features the best twelve year olds in the world and a League of Dreams game where children with special needs have the opportunity to play the game of baseball in a positive environment.

With the center of attention being focused on baseball, what often times goes unnoticed is the community involvement that takes place beyond the baseball field. "The Ripken World Series is not just about the baseball," said Morris. "It's about the community and fans from around the world who come to interact with one another." Morris and her staff hope to create more awareness of the event by reaching out to those around the world via social media. All games and events that take place during the World Series are FREE. With this being the only nationally televised event in Hartford County, Morris encourages everyone who can make it to the World Series to take the opportunity and enjoy a special event unlike any other.

Not only does the Cal Ripken World Series have an impact on young athletes, but the Ripken family as well. "It's good to have someone like Cal being able to watch their games, give them pointers and encourage these young athletes to do their best," said Morris. The Ripken Way encourages hard work, perseverance and sportsmanship which will be honored throughout the World Series. Cal and the rest of the Ripken family will be at the World Series throughout the week as they continue to build a positive environment in Aberdeen.

18 talented teams will take center stage in Aberdeen Maryland August 8th through August 16th in hopes of being crowned the Cal Ripken World Series champion.
