Lancaster shutout at Sam Lynn, 5-0
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The JetHawks spoiled an opportunity with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth inning and were eventually shut out, 5-0, by the Bakersfield Blaze on Saturday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Lancaster (72-53) loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth inning but Jobduan Morales hit into a 1-2-3 double play and, after a Ronnie Mitchell walk, Danry Vasquez lined out to second base to end the inning.
Bakersfield (70-55) followed with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Evan Grills (1-3) hit Juan Perez to start the inning and, two batters later, Sebastian Elizalde singled him home for the first run of the game. Grills picked Elizalde off of first base but the throw was dropped by Jack Mayfield for an error. Joe Hudson followed with a double to put the Blaze ahead 2-0.
The Blaze chased Grills in the fifth inning. Jeff Gelalich reached on a Chan Moon error and Sean Buckley singled before Marquez Smith blasted a three-run home run to put Bakersfield ahead, 5-0. Gonzalo Sanudo entered the game and retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Brian Holmes tossed three scoreless innings as the piggyback starter to end the game.
Daniel Wright (9-4) allowed four hits over six scoreless innings to pick up the win for Bakersfield.
The series continues with a 12 p.m. game on Sunday afternoon in Bakersfield. Kyle Westwood will start against Ismael Guillon.
