Wilson homers twice to lead K-Mets past Bristol, 5-3
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (August 14, 2014) - The Kingsport Mets were outhit 9-6 on Thursday night, but thanks to Ivan Wilson, that didn't matter.
Wilson homered twice, accounting for three total runs including the game winner, as the K-Mets beat the Bristol Pirates 5-3 at Hunter Wright Stadium. Kingsport now has won seven of its past eight and remains in the thick of the Appalachian League playoff chase.
The K-Mets now have sole possession of second place in the Appy West, leading the Johnson City Cardinals by a half-game and the Greeneville Astros by a full game. That's significant, considering the top two teams in each division advance to postseason play.
Wilson belted his eighth and ninth home runs of the season, both off of Bristol starter Junior Lopez (3-3). The first dinger was a two-run blow in the second inning, capping a three-spot by Kingsport that opened scoring.
Then, after Bristol rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth, Wilson swatted a one-out offering from Lopez over the wall in right field.
The Pirates (15-37) didn't score again.
Wilson is now third in the league in homers with nine; two players share the tie for the league lead with 10 round-trippers apiece. Curiously, one of those players-Princeton's Nic Wilson-and Kingsport's Wilson also rank among the Appy leaders in strikeouts.
Jimmy Duff (3-1) picked up the win with 3 1-3 innings of scoreless relief behind starter Andrew Massie. Duff came in with two outs and men on the corners after Bristol already had plated a pair of runs in the fifth, but struck out Nathan Thomazewski swinging to end the inning. He retired 10 of the 12 men he faced, only allowing a pair of singles.
Ismael Tijerina pitched around a one-out error in the ninth to record his sixth save.
Wilson and Luis Canelon had two hits apiece to pace Kingsport at the plate.
Kingsport goes for the series sweep of Bristol in what also marks the final meeting between these two teams Friday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
K-METRIC: As his second pro season winds down, first baseman Zach Mathieu is finding his groove at the plate. Mathieu doubled home Kingsport's first run in the second inning on Thursday, and tallied a hit for the fifth straight game and ninth time in his past 10 contests. He's hitting .368 in the month of August, with a robust .902 OPS.
