Wings drop pair to Chiefs

August 17, 2014

The Rochester Red Wings dropped a doubleheader to the Syracuse Chiefs Sunday night at Frontier Field. The losses dropped the Wings seven games behind the first place Chiefs; Pawtucket also lost Sunday, so the Red Wings are now three games behind the PawSox for the wild card spot. The series concludes Monday night at 7:05 p.m.; Rochester native and Buffalo Sabres forward Brian Gionta will sign autographs before the game, and the first 500 kids eat free on Mondays. Complete promotions details below....

Meet David Justice Aug. 24 Game One:

The Chiefs took game one, in a ten inning, three and a half hour marathon. The Chiefs exploded for three runs in the tenth, after only scoring on two solo home runs in the first and fourth innings.

Game one featured the same starting pitchers who were slated to pitch Saturday before the rain made its way to Frontier Field. Logan Darnell, making his first start since his no-hitter back on August 11, opposed fellow Tennessee native Taylor Hill. The two faced off back on May 29, also at Frontier Field, with Hill picking up the win.

Chiefs lead-off batter Emmanuel Burriss hit a line drive home run off Darnell to open the game.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Wings tied the score. Chris Herrmann led off with a double, tagged up and hustled to third base on a flyball by Deibinson Romero, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Ortiz.

The Chiefs used their second solo shot of the night to jump ahead 2-1 on the Wings. After allowing only one hit since the lead-off home run, Darnell gave up the deep home run to Tyler Moore in the top of the fourth.

Herrmann replicated Moore's long ball in the Wings half of the fourth, blasting a no-doubt home run well over the right field fence. Herrmann's third homer on the year tied the game at 2-2.

Darnell made it through 5 2/3 innings before leaving the game in favor of Lester Oliveros. Oliveros, riding a 12.0 inning scoreless streak, struck out Moore to retire the side in the sixth. Darnell gave up three hits, including the two solo home runs which led to Syracuse's two runs. Darnell also struck out three over the course of 90 pitches (52 strikes).

Daniel Stange came on in relief of Hill to start the sixth. Hill lasted five innings, giving up two runs, on three hits. Hill pitched a total of 85 pitches (52 strikes).

Oliveros retired the Chiefs in order, thanks to a double play, in the top of the seventh, giving the Wings' bats a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Oliveros' scoreless innings streak was extended to 13 1/3 innings after the seventh.

The Wings faltered in their attempt for a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh. A one out walk issued to Romero gave the Wings a chance to knock in the winning run. However, when pinch runner Doug Bernier got caught stealing and pinch hitter Wilkin Ramirez struck out looking, the inning was over, sending the game to extras.

Oliveros stuck around to work the top of the eighth. A lead-off single by Josh Johnson, followed by a sacrifice bunt, put the go-ahead run in scoring position with only one out. Oliveros was able to keep his streak alive, as well as the game tied, getting Emmanuel Burriss on strikes and getting Jeff Kobernus to ground out to third.

Pedro Florimon's second double of the game in the bottom of the eighth gave the Wings the winning run in scoring position with no outs. Following a Dan Rohlfing strikeout, Aaron Hicks moved Florimon to third with a groundout to first. With the winning run 90 feet away, James Beresford, second on the team in RBI, came to bat with two outs. Beresford lofted a 2-2 pitch to center to end the inning, sending the game to the ninth.

Tuesday's scheduled starter Mark Hamburger came on to begin the ninth. Oliveros pitched excellently, giving up only two hits in 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Oliveros' scoreless streak stood at 14 1/3 innings after today's outing.

Hamburger allowed a lead-off single, followed by a walk, to put runners at first and second with no outs. Eury Perez came to bat, looking to advance the runners. Instead, Perez popped a bunt attempt right into the glove of Hamburger, who quickly turned and fired to second to double off the runner. Hamburger retired the next batter, keeping the game tied, as well as giving the Wings a third chance to walk-off.

The Chiefs broke the tie in the top of the tenth, when Burriss singled to right. Ramirez came up throwing on the play, and appeared to have Josh Johnson out at home. However, Johnson knocked the ball out of catcher Dan Rohlfing's glove, allowing Johnson to score. Also, Sandy Leon came around from first to score on the play when Rohlfing dropped the ball. Brandon Laird tacked on one more for the Chiefs with a single, scoring Burriss. The Chiefs took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the tenth.

Rafael Martin came on to close out the game for Syracuse. Martin came into the game not allowing a run in 45 1/3 innings, going back to his days with Double-A Harrisburg.

Despite allowing a one-out double to Ramirez, Martin got out of the inning unharmed, recording the save for the Chiefs. Matt Grace was credited with the win.

Game Two:

Sean Gilmartin matched-up with fellow southpaw Aaron Laffey to start game two. Gilmartin, making his first start against Syracuse this season, came into the game with a 2-3 record, to go along with a 3.60 ERA. Laffey has been dynamite for the Chiefs while at home, however, Laffey has struggled on the road this season, going 5-3 with a 4.14 ERA away from NBT Bank Stadium.

The Chiefs struck first in their half of the first inning in game two as well. Emmanuel Burriss followed up his lead-off homer in game one with a lead-off single in game two. A walk and a fielder's choice put Burriss at third. Eury Perez drove Burriss in, putting the Chiefs up 1-0. A bases loaded walk by Gilmartin tacked on one more for the Chiefs. The Chiefs were not done, however. Following the walk, Sandy Leon belted the first pitch he saw into the Chiefs bullpen for a grand slam. Syracuse took a commanding 6-0 lead, on three hits, after the first.

Rochester began to chip away at the Chiefs lead in the second. A two-out double by Eric Farris plated James Beresford and moved Doug Bernier to third. The Wings settled for just the one run in the inning, cutting the Syracuse lead to 6-1.

In the third, the Chiefs' lead dwindled once again on a two out double. Josmil Pinto drew a walk with one out and then Chris Herrmann drove him home with a scorching double over the left fielder's head. Pinto hustled home from first, sliding in just ahead of the tag.

Laffey was done after three innings, replaced by Mitch Lively in the bottom of the fourth. Laffey allowed five hits, two earned runs and a walk in his three innings, striking out three and throwing 80 pitches (54 for strikes). The Wings greeted Lively with a run, Bernier doubled and Aaron Hicks followed with a double of his own to make it a 6-3 game.

The Chiefs put runners at second and third with none out in the fifth, and Gilmartin intentionally walked Brandon Laird to load the bases. A.J. Achter took over for Gilmartin on the mound, and with the infield playing in Achter got a popout from clean-up hitter Tyler Moore for the first out. Eury Perez lined a single just past shortstop Pedro Florimon to bring in a run, and the Chiefs led 7-3.

Gilmartin's final line: four innings, four hits, seven earned runs and five walks to go with three strikeouts. Gilmartin threw 83 pitches, 48 for strikes.

Achter struck out three and walked one in his two innings of work. Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Pinto had three hits and a walk in the second game. Bernier and Hicks each had two hits, as the Wings out-hit the Chiefs 11-6 but also left 10 runners on base.
