Word For The Day: Atonement

Word For The Day: Atonement

In the first inning Friday night, RockHounds shortstop Dusty Coleman's two-base throwing error opened the door for Springfield to take the lead, which the Cardinals did on Cody Stanley's sacrifice fly. One inning later, Dusty made amends.

Coleman ripped a two-run home run, a line drive to deep left field, giving the 'Hounds a lead they wouldn't relinquish, despite a late Springfield rally. The home run, Dusty's 14th (he shares the team lead with Kent Matthes), pushed his RBI total to 66, second in the Texas League. In the fourth, Coleman singled and stole second, eventually scoring what would become the game-winning run on (ironically) a throwing error by Cardinals shortstop Alex Mejia.

RockHounds starter Chris Jensen became the Texas League's first 12-game winner in 2014, going seven innings and allowing one (unearned) run on two hits and three walks, while striking out five. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.32 (12th in the Texas League).

The bullpen allowed one run in the eighth. Frank Gailey allowed a walk and a hit in one-third of an inning and Jose Flores gave up an RBI single to Curt Smith, cutting the 'Hounds' lead to 3-2. Flores then walked Rafael Ortega to load the bases before getting Patrick Wisdom to pop out to right field, ending the inning. Flores retired the side in order in the ninth, earning his ninth save in as many chances (see below).

Kibbles & Bits

-     The RockHounds won for the second straight night, squaring their record on the (six-game) road trip at 2-2 … they also evened the season series with Springfield at 5-5 … home field hasn't meant much in the season match-up … the RockHounds finished 2-4 at home and are 3-1 at Hammons Field … the 'Hounds (69-55) stayed two-and-a-half games behind Frisco (71-52) for the league's top overall record.

Second Half: Frisco (an 8-2 winner at Tulsa) and the RockHounds remain in a tie for first place in the South with both clubs at 31-23. San Antonio lost at home to Arkansas (8-4), while Corpus Christi rallied in the ninth (also at home) to defeat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, 2-1. The Missions and Hooks (both 24-30) are now seven games behind the co-leaders.

Wild Card:      If first half champion Frisco maintains first place in the second half race, the South Division's second playoff team would be a wild card, based on the best season record among the other three division clubs. The RockHounds (69-55) now lead San Antonio (60-64) by nine games and Corpus Christi (58-66) by 11 games in the wild card standings.

Remaining Schedule: There are 16 games remaining in the 2014 regular season. The RockHounds wrap up the current road trip with two more in Springfield (MO), followed by 14 games of divisional play to end the regular season. The 'Hounds have four games versus San Antonio (road), four versus Corpus Christi (home) and six versus Frisco (three home, three road) over the final two weeks of the season.

-     Kenny Wilson (1-for-4, double) extended his hit streak to 11 games (18-45, .400) and has hit in 12-of-13 games with the RockHounds (.385) … Dusty Coleman went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a pair with his 14th home run … he leads the league with 70 runs scored (nine more than any other player) and is second in RBI, trailing Arkansas' Alex Yarbrough by one ribbie.

-     In nine save opportunities, Jose Flores has pitched 10-and-two-thirds innings without allowing a run, earned or otherwise, and has given up just three hits in those games … in eight NON-save appearances, his ERA is 7.88, allowing seven (earned) runs on nine hits in eight innings.

-     The RockHounds continue their final cross-division road trip of the 2014 (regular) season with games Saturday evening (6:10) and Sunday afternoon (2:10) versus the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri.
