Santos sets IL hit streak mark for season

Syracuse shortstop extends run to 18 games on 2-for-5 night

Sergio Santos went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to an International League-best 18 games and lifting Syracuse over visiting Columbus, 10-3, on Sunday.

Santos doubled to spark a six-run first inning for the SkyChiefs (28-35). He added a single in the second and scored on Chad Mottola's ground-rule double as Syracuse opened a 7-0 lead.

Bill Sweeney of Baltimore owns the longest hitting streak in league history. He strung together hits in 36 games in a row in 1935.

Rob Cosby homered, Wayne Lydon had a bases-loaded triple and Ryan Roberts added a two-run double for the SkyChiefs, who have won five of six.

Dustin McGowan (3-2) picked up the win after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Columbus starter Tommy Phelps (1-2) surrendered seven runs on 10 hits in two innings.

Carlos Pena homered and Kevin Reese and Mitch Jones had two hits apiece for the Clippers (25-37), who have dropped two of three.
