Z's win on Bogusevic's walk-off homer

Game-winner bounces off of Borenstein's glove, over left-field wall
August 19, 2014

Brian Bogusevic homered in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting the New Orleans Zephyrs to a walk-off, 3-2 victory over the Reno Aces on Monday night.

Bogusevic drilled a Kevin Munson offering deep to left field leading off the 11th. Zach Borenstein made a leaping attempt on the warning track, only for the ball to carom off his glove and over the fence.

The fifth home run of the season for Bogusevic provided the Z's with their sixth walk-off victory, though for much of the game, the focus was again on an attempt at history on the mound.

For the second consecutive game, the New Orleans Zephyrs took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

After giving Andrew Heaney a 1-0 lead on Sunday during his no-hit bid, the Z's staked Anthony DeSclafani to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Austin Wates drew a lead off walk and came around to score on a bases-loaded walk by Kyle Jensen that followed singles by Kike Hernandez and Justin Bour.

DeSclafani mowed through the Aces' lineup for four innings, but had gone more than two weeks since his last start and was removed after 60 pitches. He walked two and struck out four.

Bryan Evans took over in the fifth and continued to keep Reno out of the hit column for another three frames, getting help from the Zephyrs' defense along the way.

Following a one-out walk to Mike Freeman in the sixth, PCL batting leader Andy Marte hit a sharp grounder to third that was backhanded by Juan Diaz, who began an inning-ending double play.

The Z's added their second run of the night when reliever Patrick Schuster threw a wild pitch that allowed Bogusevic to score a run charged to Harrell because he had walked Bogusevic with two outs and gave up a single to Kyle Skipworth that advanced Bogusevic to third.

After Chaz Roe took over in the eighth and struck out leadoff hitter Ronny Cedeno, a grounder up the middle by Brett Jackson was smothered by Danny Black, who did not have a play as the combined no-hit bid came to an end.

One pitch later, the shutout and lead also disappeared, when Borenstein drilled a two-run homer over the right field wall.

Edgar Olmos (2-2) worked two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Munson (3-3) suffered the defeat.

The Zephyrs wrap up the series and homestand on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
