August 22, 2014

OXNARD, Calif. -- The California League announced its 2014 Field Awards and Postseason All-Star Team on Friday. Ryan Christenson was named Manager of the Year. In his first year as manager in the Cal League, Christenson has seen his Stockton Ports lead the league in wins and home runs hit. The Ports currently have a magic number of three to clinch a playoff spot. Christenson is a former big leaguer with the D-backs, Brewers and Rangers.

Joining Christenson is John Wasdin, who was named Cal League Coach of the Year. Wasdin, the Ports' pitching coach, played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues. His pitching staff currently leads the Cal League in ERA (4.16), strikeouts (1,144) and WHIP (1.35). The Ports are second in the league in shutouts with nine.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes infielder Corey Seager was named the Cal League's Most Valuable Player as well as being named to the Postseason All-Star Team. Seager, a North Carolina native, was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga in July. He left the league hitting .352 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs in 80 games. The Dodgers prospect is currently hitting .349 in Double-A. Seager ranks eighth in the Minor Leagues in batting average (.351) and third in extra base hits (68). He is the brother of Mariners infielder Kyle Seager.

Left-hander Josh Hader of the Lancaster JetHawks was named Pitcher of the Year. Selected by the Astros in the 19th round of the 2012 Draft, Hader leads the Cal League in ERA (2.70) and WHIP (1.10) while ranking eighth in strikeouts with 112. He also has a pair of saves to go along with a stellar 9-2 record.

The Cal League Rookie of the Year award belongs to Lake Elsinore shortstop Jose Rondon. The 20-year-old started the year with Inland Empire before being traded to the Padres and assigned to the Storm. For the season, Rondon is hitting .315.
