Munoz Wins Tom Racine MVP Award

August 24, 2014

BURLINGTON, VT --- Vermont Lake Monsters shortstop Yairo Munoz was named the winner of the 2014 Tom Racine Award, given to the player voted the team MVP by the Lake Monsters fans and sponsored by Free Press Media.

The 19-year old Munoz enters the final week of the season leading the team in games (59), hits (68), runs (27), doubles (15) and stolen bases (13), while his .305 batting average is currently fifth in the New York-Penn League.

Munoz has showed consistency at the plate all season, collecting at least one hit in 46 of his 58 games started and has not gone more than one game all season with getting a base hit. Earlier this season he hit .339 during a 17-game hitting streak, the third longest in the league this year and tied for the fourth longest in Lake Monsters history.

The Racine Award is named after the Vermont Expos first General Manager Tom Racine (1994-95), who passed away in January of 1996. The Burlington Free Press created the award in 1996 and previous winners include former Major Leaguers Chris Stowers (1996), Talmadge Nunnari (1997), Matt Watson (1999), Brandon Watson (2000), Michael Hinckley (2002), Justin Maxwell (2005) and current Oakland A's catcher Derek Norris (2008).

Paul Stanfield is the Media Relations Director for the Vermont Lake Monsters.
