Stone named NYPL Player of the Week
Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced that State College Spikes infielder Jake Stone has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week ending August 24, 2014.
Stone went 8-for-21 with four doubles, a home run and nine runs batted in from August 18-24, helping propel the Spikes offense as they clinched their second consecutive New York-Penn League Pinckney Division title. The Tennessee Wesleyan product was instrumental in the Spikes' division-clinching win on Saturday, smashing a three-run homer and collected five RBI in a 7-3 victory over Jamestown.
Through August 25, the Wilmington, NC native is hitting .265 with five home runs and 38 RBI over his first 51 games. Stone , a 27th-round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013, has also reached base at a .363 clip with the Spikes this season. The left-handed hitter compiled a .298 batting average with one homer and 20 RBI over 41 games with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals last year.
