Erie's Moya Named Eastern League MVP
Portland, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Erie SeaWolves outfielder Steven Moya has been selected as the winner of the 2014 Eastern League Most Valuable Player Award. Moya is batting .271 (137-for-505) with 32 doubles, three triples, 34 home runs, 102 RBI, 78 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, a .549 slugging percentage and a .299 on-base percentage in 130 games for the SeaWolves this season. The 23-year old has rewritten the Erie record books with his performance this season, setting new a single-season mark for total bases (277) while tying the single-season records for home runs (34) and RBI (102). Moya currently leads all Eastern League hitters in RBI (102), home runs (34), slugging percentage (.549), total bases (277) and extra-base hits (69). He is also ranked among the leaders doubles (32-2nd), runs scored (78-4th), hits (137-4th) and OPS (.847-5th). Steven is also tied for 10th in the league with eight outfield assists this season and he has made just three errors while appearing in 128 games in right field for the SeaWolves.
The Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico native was especially impressive during the month of July when he was named the Eastern League Player of the Month after hitting .304 with 10 homers, 33 RBI and 20 runs scored in 29 games during the month. Steven also participated in the Eastern League All-Star Game in Altoona in July and was the winner of the MiLB.com Top Star Award as the MVP of the game after hitting the game-winning grand slam for the Western Division in a 5-2 win over the Eastern Division.
Moya, who was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on October 1, 2008, was selected as an outfielder on the recently announced 2014 Eastern League All-Star Team. He was also a member of the World Team at the MLB Futures Game in Minnesota and was selected by Baseball America as the "Best Power Prospect" in the Eastern League this season in their annual "Best Tools" voting.
Harrisburg Senators outfielder Michael Taylor finished second in the voting for the MVP Award and Bowie Baysox first baseman Christian Walker finished in third place in the voting. The award was voted on by respective Eastern League managers and media members.
