Billy McMillon Named Manager of the Year
Portland, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Portland Sea Dogs manager Billy McMillon has been selected as the 2014 Eastern League Manager of the Year. McMillon has led the Sea Dogs to their first postseason berth since 2008 with a league-best record of 85-52 in his first season as manager in Portland. The Sea Dogs are currently in first place in the Eastern Division, holding a two game lead over the second place Binghamton Mets. If the Sea Dogs hold on to win the division it will be their first division title since 2005. McMillon, who resides in Columbia South Carolina, began his managerial career in 2010 as the manager of the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League, leading the team to the South Atlantic Championship Series in his managerial debut. After two seasons in Greenville, Billy moved up to manage the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League in 2012 and 2013, leading the team to the Carolina League Championship in 2013. In five seasons as a manager Billy has compiled a record of 384-307 (.556).
Prior to his managerial career McMillon spent parts of six seasons as a player in the Major Leagues. He was originally drafted by the Florida Marlins in the eighth round of the 1993 draft and appeared with the Marlins, Phillies, Tigers and Athletics in 269 career Major League games from 1996-2004. While making his way up through the Marlins organization Billy played for the Portland Sea Dogs, hitting .313 with 29 doubles, 14 homers, 93 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 141 games and being named to the Eastern League Season Ending All-Star Team in 1995.
