'Ducks Score Final 10 Runs, Swim Away from Thunder

August 28, 2014

AKRON, OH - After leading 3-1 entering the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Akron RubberDucks scored the final 10 runs of the ballgame to win 11-3 Thursday night at Canal Park.

Trenton pitching allowed 23 baserunners in eight innings against the RubberDucks lineup including 15 hits, seven walks and a hit-by-pitch. With just four more games remaining in the season, starting pitcher Joel De La Cruz was making his last scheduled start of the season and allowed the most hits and runs in a game in his Double-A career. Over 3.1 innings, the righty surrendered seven runs- all earned- on 11 hits, a walk and a HBP. He picked up the loss which dropped his record to 4-4 and raised his season ERA from 3.47 to 4.34.

Out of the bullpen, Cesar Cabral was touched for three runs in 2.0 IP, while James Pazos allowed one earned run in his 1.1 innings of work. Pazos allowed one run on a hit and four walks, throwing 25 pitches with just nine strikes.

Offensively, the Thunder struck for a leadoff home run on just the second pitch of the game. For the second time on the roadtrip, Trenton got a leadoff homer from Jake Cave for an early 1-0 lead. Even after the 'Ducks tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning, Trenton's offense responded with a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd inning off Akron starting pitcher Duke von Schamann, before the RubberDucks hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning for a 4-3 lead. The two teams' offenses combined to produce 18 baserunners in the first two innings, but Akron would begin to stretch its lead from its early 4-3 lead.

The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Thunder which was the team's longest regular season winning streak since they won eight in-a-row in the middle of the 2012 season.

The Thunder return home to ARM & HAMMER Park Friday night to begin four games against the Reading Fightin Phils to cap the regular season. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:45 p.m. Trenton Thunder pre-game show which can be heard on 91.3 FM or on www.trentonthunder.com.
