Tomberlin Named AFL Hitting Coach
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte hitting coach Andy Tomberlin, a native of Monroe, NC, has been named as the hitting coach for the Glendale Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League. Tomberlin will join seven Chicago White Sox prospects, including Charlotte's Scott Snodgress, who will take their talents to the AFL this year. The Arizona Fall League -- an offseason league owned and operated by Major League Baseball -- officially kicks off on Tuesday, October 7 and runs through Saturday, November 15. Prospects from the White Sox, along with the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers, will make up the Glendale roster.
Tomberlin, a product of Piedmont High School, is in his second season with the Knights as hitting coach. Under his guidance this season, Charlotte's offense leads all of baseball -- both Major League and Minor League -- in home runs with 172. The Knights also lead the International League in runs scored (688), total bases (2066), and RBIs (646). Tomberlin was the hitting coach of the Knights in 2012 when the team went to the Governors' Cup championship against the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Overall, the 2014 season is Tomberlin's 12th in the White Sox organization. He has also spent time as hitting coach of High-A Winston-Salem (2004-05), Double-A Birmingham (2006 and 2009-11), and Single-A Kannapolis (2007-08 and 2013) while with the White Sox system. He played 15 seasons professionally from 1986-2000.
Snodgress, 24, is the lone Knights player on the roster. Currently, the Fontana, CA native is 0-1 with a 4.96 ERA in eight games out of the Charlotte bullpen. Snodgress compiled a 6-7 record with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts for the Double-A Birmingham Barons earlier this season. A product of Stanford University, he entered this season ranked as the 12th best prospect in the Chicago White Sox system by MLB.com.
Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, Snodgress recorded a career-high 11 wins last season with the Barons. Overall, he went 11-11 with a 4.70 ERA in 26 starts. He was named to the 2013 Southern League mid-season All-Star Team last year and ranked among the White Sox organizational leaders in wins (T-5th), IP (9th, 143.2), and complete games (5th, 2). He entered last season ranked by Baseball America as the sixth-best prospect in the White Sox organization.
Lance Parrish will manage the Desert Dogs this season and six other White Sox prospects will compete for the club this year. Pitchers Chris Bassitt, Francellis Montas, Jefferson Olacio, catcher Kevan Smith, and infielders Tim Anderson and Rangel Ravelo round out the Chicago players in this year's AFL season.
