Ringo Homers Among Three RBI in Chiefs 4-2 Win

Chiefs one game out of Wild Card with two games to play

GENEVA, IL- Justin Ringo homered leading off the eighth inning for his third RBI of the game and Alex Reyes struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings as the Peoria Chiefs beat the Kane County Cougars 4-2 on Saturday night. The Chiefs win, coupled with Wisconsin's loss to Beloit, puts the Chiefs one game back of the Wild Card race with two games remaining in the season. The Chiefs are 34-34 in the second half and 71-66 overall.

   The Chiefs started the scoring in the third inning against Daury Torrez. With one out, Rafael Medina singled and Vaughn Bryan singled with two outs. CJ McElroy Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ringo singled up the middle scoring Medina and Bryan for a 2-0 lead.

   Kane County got one run back in the bottom of the inning against Reyes as Chesny Young led off with a single. A ground out moved him to second and Young scored on a Yasiel Balaguert single.

   The Chiefs added needed insurance in the eighth against Michael Wagner when Ringo led off with his ninth home run of the year. Ronald Castillo followed with a single and Rowan Wick doubled to put runners at second and third. Steve Bean walked with one out to load the bases and Medina hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Castillo and give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead.

   The Cougars got one run in the ninth against Kyle Barraclough. Daniel Lockhart singled and Carlos Penalver walked to begin the frame. After a strikeout, Trey Martin reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Young hit a sac fly to right scoring Lockhart for the second out and Barraclough struck out Jeimer Candelario to end the game with the tying run in scoring position.

   Reyes (7-7) pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts to earn the win. Jhonny Polanco tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings on one hit with three strikeouts. Barraclough pitched the ninth allowing an unearned run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts to earn his tenth save.

Notes: The eight strikeouts for Reyes gives him 137 which puts him in 14th place in single-season franchise history…The 137 strikeouts is the most since 1996 when Britt Reames had 161 and Cliff Politte had 151…Barraclough has saved eight of the last 11 Chiefs wins, dating back to August 8…Ringo had his second multi-RBI game in his last three games…Wick picked up his seventh outfield assist in 36 games…McElroy was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season which ties him for fourth-most in single-season franchise history and tied for ninth all-time…Game two of the series is Sunday at 6:30 p.m….The Chiefs send RHP Luis Perdomo (3-5, 4.86) to the mound against RHP Ben Wells (3-0, 2.01) for Kane County…The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:15 p.m., on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
