Brennan Boesch Crowned 2014 PCL Batting Champion

September 2, 2014

SALT LAKE CITY (September 2, 2014) - With a .332 batting average for the 2014 season Salt Lake Bees outfielder Brennan Boesch claimed the title of Pacific Coast League Batting Champion, the league office officially announced today.

Boesch collected 124 hits on 374 at-bats and led the team with 25 home runs and 85 RBIs. The Bees outfielder finished fifth in the league with 57 extra-base hits and also led the league in slugging percentage with a new franchise record of .636.

A 29-year old native of Santa Monica, Calif., Boesch was named to the PCL All-Star team in July and was selected as the designated hitter for the 2014 All-PCL team at the end of the season. Boesch also received awards as the PCL Player of the Week on June 23 and PCL Player of the Month for June.

Boesch is the first Salt Lake player to win the PCL batting title since Rick Short led the league with a .356 average in 2002. The Salt Lake club has now won the honor five times since the current franchise's arrival in 1994, the most in the PCL during that 21-season span. Previous winners include Riccardo Ingram in 1995 (.348), Brian Raabe in 1996 (.351), John Barnes in 2000 (.365) and Short in 2002 (.356).

To be crowned a league's batting champion, hitters in Minor League Baseball must qualify with 2.7 plate appearances per league game scheduled, equating to 389 for the 144-game schedule in the Pacific Coast League.

As a team Salt Lake led the PCL with a .293 batting average. The club finished first in triples with 57 and was the second highest scoring team in the league, scoring 790 runs on the season.
