Red Sox Select Matt Barnes to Active Roster

September 8, 2014

The Boston Red Sox today selected right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, outfielder Shane Victorino was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. Barnes will wear No. 68 and is active for tonight's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

For Barnes, 24, this is his first career major league stint. He has spent all of 2014 with the PawSox and went 8-9 with a 3.95 ERA (56 ER/127.2 IP) and 103 strikeouts in 23 regular season outings (22 starts), including a 3.41 ERA beginning in June. He gave up two runs or less in seven of eight starts after the All-Star break, over which he led the league with a 0.87 WHIP and .167 opponent average while posting a 2.38 ERA. Barnes also earned the win with 7.0 shutout innings on Thursday night in the second game of the Governors' Cup Semifinals against Syracuse. The right-hander, selected with Boston's first pick in the 2011 June Draft (1st round, 19th overall), entered this season rated by Baseball America as the No. 9 prospect in the Red Sox organization. He is 21-24 with a 3.64 ERA (146 ER/360.2 IP) and 378 strikeouts in parts of three minor league seasons in the Red Sox farm system from 2012-14. The native of Bethel, CT attended the University of Connecticut, where he was the unanimous Big East Pitcher of the Year as a junior in 2011 after leading the conference in wins (11), strikeouts (97), and ERA (1.20).

Victorino, 33, had been placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 1 (retroactive to July 31) and underwent successful lumbar disectomy surgery on August 5. This is his third stint on the DL in 2014, after twice missing time with a right hamstring injury. In 30 games for Boston this season, he batted .268 (33-for-123) with six doubles, one triple, two home runs, 12 RBI, and 14 runs scored.

With today's move, Boston's active major league roster is now at 32.
