Cougars Win Midwest League Championship
(Eastlake, OH) - The Kane County Cougars defeated the Lake County Captains by a final of 7-2 and won their second Midwest League Championship in franchise history. The Cougars took the lead in the top of the third inning on a Jacob Rogers two run home run. The home run was the second of the post season for Rogers and put the Cougars ahead for good. Counting the post season the Cougars won 98 ballgames on the 2014 season and were undefeated in the playoffs.
Lake County scored first. In the bottom half of the opening inning, Ivan Castillo singled and scored on an RBI double from Clint Frazier and the score was 1-0. Kane County scored a run to tie the ballgame in the top of the second inning. Jacob Rogers singled and scored on a Carlos Penalver double and the score was 1-1.
Kane County added on in the top of the fifth inning, Jacob Rogers singled home his third RBI of the ballgame and the score was 4-1. Rogers also scored two runs in the game. The Cougars added three in the top of the sixth inning. The big hit in the inning was an RBI single from Yasiel Balagurt. The score was 7-1 Cougars.
Brian Ruiz singled home Dorssys Paulino in the bottom of the seventh inning and the score was 7-2. That score was the final.
LHP Anderson Polanco started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Polanco pitched four and one third innings and allowed seven hits, four earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Polanco allowed one homer. Robbie Aviles pitched one and one third innings and allowed four hits, and three unearned runs. Justin Brantley pitched one and one third innings of scoreless baseball. Brantley allowed two hits. Carlos Melo pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Trevor Frank pitched the ninth for the Captains.
RHP Duary Torrez got the start for the Cougars and earned the win. Torrez pitched five innings and allowed five hits, one earned run and he fanned three. Michael Heesch pitched three innings and allowed one earned run on two hits. Francisco Carillo pitched the ninth inning to record the final three outs for the Cougars.
Opening Day for the 2015 regular season is on April 10th when the Captains will be in Lansing, Michigan just 211 days away.
