Omaha Wins PCL Championship Sunday

Storm Chasers to Face PawSox Tuesday at BB&T Ballpark
September 14, 2014

(OMAHA, NE) - For the third time over the past four seasons, the Omaha Storm Chasers are the champions of the Pacific Coast League. Omaha (Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals) shut out the Reno Aces (Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) by a score 4-0 on Sunday en route to back-to-back PCL Championships. The Storm Chasers will now represent the Pacific Coast League at the Gildan Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game on Tuesday, September 16 at BB&T Ballpark. First pitch of Tuesday's game is set for 7:07 p.m. from Uptown Charlotte.

Omaha will face the Pawtucket Red Sox, who won the Governors' Cup on Saturday night with a 4-1 win over the Durham Bulls in Durham, NC. The PawSox are playing in the Triple-A National Championship Game for the second time in three years (2012).

The Storm Chasers won the Triple-A Baseball National Championship over Durham last year at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. Omaha is just the second team in PCL Championship history to win three PCL titles in the span of four seasons. The 1980-82 Albuquerque Dukes are the only other PCL team to pull off the feat.

As for Sunday's game, Aaron Brooks started for the Storm Chasers and tossed a complete game shutout for the win. Brooks allowed just two hits and two walks, while striking out nine batters over nine innings. He retired the final 20 batters of the game. Pedro Ciriaco and Paulo Orlando had two hits apiece in Sunday's win.

Omaha is led by manager Brian Poldberg, pitching coach Larry Carter, and hitting coach Tommy Gregg, a former Charlotte Knights slugger who hit 31 home runs for the club over parts of two seasons (1995-96). Gregg, a native of Boone, NC, hit 22 home runs and added 80 RBIs for Charlotte in 1996. Offensively, Omaha is led by University of South Carolina product Whit Merrifield, who hit .385 in the playoffs this season. Merrifield is a native of Advance, NC.

All eyes will be on Uptown Charlotte on Tuesday, September 16 as the 2014 Gildan Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game comes to the Queen City. The game, which will be broadcast to a national television audience on NBC Sports Network, is a one-game, winner-take-all matchup between the top team in the International League (PawSox) against the top team in the Pacific Coast League (Storm Chasers).

Gates are set to open at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at BB&T Ballpark and fans can enjoy $3 domestic beer specials and $1 sodas. After the game, the Knights will light up the Uptown Charlotte skyline with a spectacular post-game fireworks show. Tickets are currently available online at charlotteknights.com, in person at the BB&T Ballpark Ticket Office, and by phone at 704-274-8282.
