A Look Back at the Sea Dogs Historic 2014 Season

The Portland Sea Dogs 2014 season has been one for the record books. The Sea Dogs produced an 88-54 record, the best mark in the franchise's 21 year history and reached the post-season for the first time since 2008. Along the way there were many magical moments and records including six walk-off wins. Here is a peak at some of the records and highlights that took place in 2014.

Records                                                           

  • Best record in franchise history (88-54), surpassing the previous mark of 86-56 in 1995.
  • Henry Owens set the franchise record with 14 wins in a season.
  • Brian Johnson surpassed Henry Owens & Jon Lester as the Sea Dogs career ERA leader (1.75).
  • Henry Owens tossed a record 27.2 consecutive scoreless innings (May 19- June 14)
  • Henry Owens tied a franchise record by winning eight consecutive starts (May 24- July 19)

 

Streaks                                                            

  • Mookie Betts hit safely in a team high 17 straight games from April 9-April 30. It was the second longest hit streak since the Sea Dogs became a Red Sox affiliate in 2003.
  • Mookie Betts reached base in 36 consecutive games from April 3- May 16. It was the fifth longest streak in franchise history. Dating back to 2013 with High-A Salem, Betts reached base in 66 straight games.
  • The Sea Dogs won 10 straight games August 15- August 25. It was the 7th time in franchise history the team has produced at least ten straight wins.

  • Mookie Betts led-off the 2014 season for the Sea Dogs with a home run.
  • The Sea Dogs led the league in pitching producing a 3.41 ERA.
  • Portland produced a league high 12 shutouts in 2014.
  • On May 29th, the Sea Dogs turned a rare 7-6-2-5-4 double play to end the game that was featured as the #6 Top Plays of the Day on Sports Center on ESPN.
  • Sean Coyle became the first player to hit a home run through the Sullivan Tire sign above the Maine Monster. Coyle and a lucky fan split a $10,000.00 pay out.

 

Red Sox Farm System:                                 

  • Five of the Red Sox seven minor league teams made the playoffs in 2014 (DSL Red Sox, GCL Red Sox, High-A Salem, Double-A Portland, & Triple-A Pawtucket). Boston's most affiliates in the postseason as far back as research is currently available (since at least 1970).
  • GCL Red Sox and Triple-A Pawtucket both captured their league championships.
  • It was the second championship in three years for the PawSox.
