Brunnemann named championship series MVP after fanning six, earning win
September 16, 2014

LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks captured the 2014 California League championship with a 10-2 win over the Visalia Rawhide in Game 5 on Monday night at The Hangar.

The victory marks the second title in the franchise's 19-year history and the first since the team's first crown in 2012.

Tyler Brunnemann (1-1) earned the victory with three perfect innings of relief and was named the MVP of the series. The reliever retired all nine batters he faced and struck out six in his third appearance of the series.

Brett Phillips set the tone at the top of the order and led the JetHawks with a 3-for-4 night. The leadoff man doubled to start the first inning and scored on a Jack Mayfield sac-fly to move ahead 1-0.

The runs kept coming as the game continued. Lancaster put up two in the second inning when Phillips singled to right field to drive in Danry Vasquez and Roberto Peña.

Visalia scored their only runs of the night in the third inning against starter Kyle Westwood. The right-hander walked and hit the first two batters of the inning and one scored on a Socrates Brito grounder and the other scored on an error. Westwood would through four-plus innings and allow two runs (one earned) on eight hits.

Brunnemann relieved Westwood with two on and no outs in the fifth inning and retired the next three batters to strand the runners.

Phillips scored again in the fourth inning. He walked with two outs and eventually scored on a Rio Ruiz RBI-single. Ruiz went 3-for-4 in the game with a double.

Chase McDonald doubled in the fifth inning and scored on a Danry Vasquez hit to make it 5-2.

After Brunnemann struck out the side in the sixth inning the JetHawks broke it open with a five-run bottom half. Phillips started the rally with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Mayfield hit. Ronnie Mitchell later added a two-run single and Vasquez and Peña each capped the frame with RBIs.

Daniel Minor pitched the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory. Minor struck out Brito for the final out and the JetHawks celebrated the championship.

Lancaster clinched a playoff spot by winning the first half title with the best first half record (44-26) in franchise history.

Monday marked the second anniversary of the JetHawks' championship-clinching game in 2012.
