Player Journal: Adam Jones

June 19, 2006
Adam Jones was the Seattle Mariners' first-round pick out of Morse High School in San Diego in 2003. Last year, he hit .297 with 15 home runs, 66 RBIs and 13 stolen bases between Class A Advanced Inland Empire and Double-A San Antonio while transitioning from shortstop to center field. The 20-year-old prospect has agreed to chronicle his 2006 season in an exclusive journal for MiLB.com.

It feels good to be back doing the journal again. It's been a couple of weeks where we were on the road and my Internet connections were terrible. That's the Minors for you.

We have been playing so-so over the last couple of weeks. I can definitely sense that we are about to go on a long winning streak. We have been swinging the bats well of late and our pitching has been OK also. We are getting closer to working on all cylinders, and that's the ingredient for success.

Personally, I have been learning from the early mistakes that I made and working on not letting them happen again. I am still trying to become a better center fielder, and of late I have had a little taste of right field. It's different, but I get to throw more from right.

At the plate, I have been making the necessary adjustments in order to have success. My swing has cut down and I am making hard contact a lot. Even if I don't get hits from hitting the ball hard, it's a positive for myself. I have been more aggressive in the zone and just overall having more fun.

How do you like playing in Cheney Stadium? So far, which ballpark in the Coast League do you like best? Sincerely, Dave Juvik

Well, playing in Cheney Stadium has been OK so far. I personally don't hit well in home parks, and I am not doing that again. But it's good to know that I can get very comfortable out there because the dimensions give me some help on developing into a better center fielder. On the road, we have been at two very good parks so far. Right now, we are in Sacramento, and they have a very nice park. Great fans, a great playing atmosphere. The other park was in Memphis. That had to be the best. The park was very nice and you could see the ball even if a righty or lefty was pitching. And that's key.
