Lowell Spinners (New York-Penn League)
Pillowcase Giveaway
Wednesday, June 21 vs. Vermont Lake Monsters
The New York-Penn League opened its 76-game season on Tuesday, which is good news for fans of Minor League giveaway items (and aren't we all?). The Class A Short-Season circuit is sure to provide us with intriguing promotions throughout its two-and-a-half-month schedule, such as the Spinners' Pillowcase Giveaway on Wednesday. Is there a better way to fall asleep than by burrowing your head into the logo of your favorite Minor League team? We think not.
Birmingham Barons (Southern League)
11th Annual Rickwood Classic
Thursday, June 22 vs. Tennessee Smokies
Since 1996, the Barons have played one game a year at their old home, 96-year-old Rickwood Field. This game is called the "Rickwood Classic," and each year the team chooses a different era of its history to celebrate during the game. This year's Classic will focus on the Barons' four-year stint as an affiliate of the New York Yankees (1953-1956). Birmingham players will wear uniforms from that era, and before the game the club will induct the second-annual class of the Barons Hall of Fame. The first 1,500 fans will receive Rick Woodward bobblehead dolls (Woodward owned the Barons from 1910-1937), and former Yankee and surgery namesake Tommy John will throw out the first pitch.
Rome Braves (South Atlantic League)
Guinness Book of World Records Whistle-Blowing Attempt
Friday, June 23 vs. Charleston RiverDogs
Nothing quite matches the glory and prestige associated with the Guinness Book of World Records. On Friday, the Rome Braves will attempt to enshrine themselves within the book's hallowed pages by setting the record for most people blowing a whistle at the same time. Fans will be given a whistle upon entering the stadium and will blow in synchronicity at some point in the evening in order to set the new world record. To get in the proper spirit for the evening, fans should rent Michael Mann's 1999 film, The Insider, in which Russell Crowe plays a courageous whistle-blower.
Mississippi Braves (Southern League)
Trustmark Park Stadium Replica Giveaway
Saturday, June 24 vs. Birmingham Barons
The Braves are currently in their second season at Trustmark Park, a beautiful facility located in Pearl, Miss. The first 2,500 fans to pass through the ballpark's gates on Saturday will receive a Trustmark Park Stadium miniature replica. The replica is the perfect item for those who have always wanted to take the stadium home with them, but did not know how to deal with the logistics of transporting a structure that weighs several hundred thousand tons.
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Midwest League)
David Ortiz Bobblehead Giveaway
Saturday, June 24 vs. South Bend Silver Hawks
Before David Ortiz was known as Big Papi and considered the most fearsome hitter in the American League, he was a Wisconsin Timber Rattler. The burly designated hitter played for the club in 1996, when he was in the Mariners organization and went by the name of David Arias. On Saturday, the Timber Rattlers will distribute 1,000 David Ortiz bobbleheads to early-arriving fans. But even latecomers will go home happy -- fans can watch the post-game fireworks show with a complimentary pair of 3-D glasses.
Syracuse SkyChiefs (International League)
Soap Opera Saturday featuring Forbes March
Saturday, June 24 vs. Toledo Mud Hens
As if anyone needed an extra incentive to go to a game at Syracuse's Alliance Bank Stadium -- One Life to Live's Forbes March will be in attendance on Saturday to sign autographs and personally connect with his legions of fans. Perhaps he will even give away a few secrets regarding Nash, the character he portrays on One Life to Live. Like, what are Nash's intentions with Tess? And does he realize the problems he's been causing with Jessica? You've got some explaining to do, Forbes.
Auburn Doubledays (New York-Penn League)
Lapel Pin Giveaway
Sunday, June 25 vs. Jamestown Jammers
The Doubledays are coming off a season in which they went 45-30, good for first place in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division. That is an accomplishment that deserves to be commemorated, preferably in pin form, and the Doubledays are up to the task. The first 500 fans through the turnstiles at Falcon Park will receive a Pinckney Division Champions lapel pin, a nifty item that should be a part of every fan's wardrobe for the rest of their lives.
Reading Phillies (Eastern League)
Father's Day Hat Giveaway
Sunday, June 25 vs. New Britain Rock Cats
The Phillies were on the road for Father's Day, so they're belatedly celebrating the holiday during Sunday's game against New Britain. In addition to Father's Day-related ceremonial first pitches and a post-game catch on the field, the Phillies will be giving away ascot hats. This type of headwear was made popular by the late Richie Ashburn, a Hall of Fame center fielder who wore an ascot throughout his 35-year broadcasting career with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Brevard County Manatees (Florida State League)
Desperate Househusbands Night
Monday, June 26 vs. St. Lucie Mets
There is no more pitiable creature in the world than the hen-pecked husband, a man whose entire existence is controlled by the Machiavellian machinations of his overbearing wife. The Brevard County Manatees feel for these poor souls, and are hoping that at least a few of them will be able to escape from their spouses long enough to attend Monday's ballgame. The team will award prizes to the most "desperate" husbands in attendance, who will be asked to provide their "honey-do" lists and other such proof of wifely domination.
Trenton Thunder (Eastern League)
Randy Johnson Bobbleheads
Monday, June 26 vs. Connecticut Defenders
Randy Johnson never pitched in the Eastern League, let alone for the Trenton Thunder. Nontheless, the 42-year-old lefty is a member of the New York Yankees, the Thunder's parent ballclub. Johnson's bobblehead will be in a Yankee uniform and will be distributed to the first 2,000 fans ages 6 and over. No baseball player taller than Johnson has ever been honored in bobblehead form, although fans of Jon Rauch hope that will soon change.
