Cuban Castillo heads to Arizona Fall League
Rusney Castillo had an eventful introduction to professional baseball, playing at four Minor League levels before getting the call to Boston, and he's set to join another team on the highly touted Arizona Fall League prospect circuit.
The Red Sox signed the Cuban defector to a seven-year, $72.5 million contact in August and he has since played for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket through their respective playoff runs.
Over his 11 games in the Minors, he posted a .293/.370/.463 slash line with a homer and five RBIs. The 27-year-old stole two bases and did not make an error during his time in the outfield.
Castillo made his time with each team count, scoring a go-ahead run for the Sea Dogs in the Eastern League semifinals and later forcing extra innings for the PawSox in the Governors' Cup Finals.
With Boston, the right-handed hitter averaged .333 with two homers and six RBIs over 10 games.
The highly touted prospect joins top Twins prospect Byron Buxton and No. 2 Cubs prospect Addison Russell as AFL headliners. The league gets underway on Oct. 7.
