Speedy Quinn comes through with stick

Phillies prospect picks up two hits, drives in two runs in AFL slugfest
October 14, 2014

Roman Quinn's specialties are supposed to be related to setting the table, then causing mayhem on it. The speedster played a slightly different role on Tuesday afternoon.

The Phillies' fifth-ranked prospect delivered a pair of RBIs as Scottsdale scored the game's first nine runs and cruised to a 10-7 Arizona Fall League win over Mesa.

Scottsdale got on the board in the top of the second as Pirates No. 3 prospect Josh Bell and L.J. Mazzilli (Mets) hit back-to-back doubles. Matt Reynolds (Mets) and Logan Moore (Phillies) drew consecutive walks and Quinn delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0.

Moore scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Gamache (Pirates) for a 4-0 cushion.

Quinn finished 2-for-6, raising his average to .200 in six Fall League games.

"I got a good pitch to hit and just put it in play," he said. "I'm feeling pretty good. I'm hitting balls on the line, they just can't find the holes right now. But it feels pretty good to get two hits today."

Quinn missed the first six weeks of the season while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. He got off to a rocky start with Class A Advanced Clearwater, hitting .255 with three stolen bases in his first 21 games.

All Quinn needed was some time, apparently. The 21-year-old outfielder batted .261 with 29 steals in the second half, flashing the chart-topping speed that helped make him a second-round pick in the 2011 Draft.

He's also continuing the transition to center field after spending his first two Minor League seasons at shortstop.

"The transition has been pretty easy," he said. "I've been playing it my whole life. I feel really good out there. I'm getting good jumps and making the right decision and my arm feels good. It feels natural."

The Scorpions added three runs in the third, all on a two-out homer by Giants prospect Daniel Carbonell. The 23-year-old Cuban was signed this summer and hit four homers in 31 games between the Rookie-level Arizona League and Class A Advanced San Jose.

Scottsdale extended its lead to 9-0 an inning later on an RBI single by Bell and a run-scoring groundout by Reynolds.

Mets No. 3 prospect Brandon Nimmo went 2-for-3 with three walks and a run scored for the Scorpions.

A pair of A's prospects slugged late homers for Mesa. Matt Olson, Oakland's No.2 prospect, smacked his AFL-leading third in the eighth, drilling a solo shot off Pirates right-hander Adrian Sampson.

In the ninth, A's No. 20 prospect Boog Powell connected for a two-run blast off Alex Smith (Yankees).

Pirates southpaw Joely Rodriguez (1-0) started for the Scorpions and yielded one hit over three scoreless innings for the win. Solar Sox starter Sean Nolin (0-1), the Blue Jays' 11th-ranked prospect, needed 48 pitches to get through 1 1/3 innings and was charged with four runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out four.
