Eleven Former Blue Rocks Help Royals To First Pennant In Three Decades
Wilmington, DE- Eleven former Wilmington Blue Rocks celebrated with the rest of their current teammates in Kansas City on Wednesday, as the Royals captured their first American League pennant in three decades. With the victory, Kansas City moves on to the World Series, where it will face either the Cardinals or the Giants. Game One is slated for Tuesday, October 21.
Eric Hosmer led all Wilmington alums with six hits in the ALCS. The 2010 Carolina League batting champion hit a robust .400 with three RBIs during Kansas City's four-game sweep. Mike Moustakas, who led Wilmington in homers in 2009, had three hits in the series versus Baltimore. Two of them were big blasts, however, and the third baseman has now hit four homers overall during the postseason. Greg Holland spent a portion of the '08 campaign with the Blue Crew and saved all four games during the ALCS, joining Dennis Eckersley (1988 Athletics) and John Wetteland (1996 Yankees) as the only other pitchers to ever accomplish that feat.
The other former Blue Crewers on the Royals active roster for the ALCS were Salvador Perez (2010), Jarrod Dyson (2008 and 2010), Kelvin Herrera (2011), Yordano Ventura (2012), Danny Duffy (2009 and 2010), Christian Colon (2010), Brandon Finnegan (2014) and Terrance Gore (2014). All but Duffy appeared in at least one game in the series.
The Blue Rocks have been a Royals affiliate for all but two seasons of their modern existence. Wilmington and Kansas City agreed to a two-year extension to their Player Development Contract in August, assuring that Wilmington will remain a Royals affiliate through at least the 2016 campaign.
The Blue Rocks, who drew 278,316 fans to Frawley Stadium in 2014 and averaged more than 4,300 patrons per game, have released their schedule for the 2015 season. The campaign will begin on the road at Myrtle Beach on Thursday, April 9. After a seven-game road trip concludes, the Rocks will return to Wilmington for their Home Opener against the Frederick Keys on Thursday, April 16. It will be the first of 70 games at Frawley Stadium in 2015. The team will release game times and ticket information for the 2015 campaign later in the offseason. Season seat packages are available now. Fans should call 302-888-BLUE or visit BlueRocks.com for more information.
