Powell Named IL Pitcher of the Week
Coming off a five inning, six hit, two earned run victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox on April 27, Powell held the Lehigh Valley IronPigs scoreless over seven innings of work to earn his first victory of the week on May 3. In the contest, Powell limited the IronPigs to five hits and three walks, while allowing only one opposing base runner to reach third base.
Powell continued his impressive run on May 9 with a six inning, one earned run performance against the Buffalo Bisons to earn his third straight win and even his season record at 3-3. The right-hander scattered 10 hits to hold the Bisons to only one earned run on the afternoon.
The California native was one of only two pitchers in the International League to collect two victories from May 3-9. Louisville Bats' LHP Aroldis Chapman also won two contests, but posted a 5.91 ERA in 10.2 IP (seven ER).
The 33-year-old right-hander signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on January 7, 2009 as a minor league free agent after spending eight seasons in the Japanese Professional League. While in Japan, Powell compiled a 69-65 record and a 3.97 ERA in 173 games (150 starts and 511 ER in 1157.0 IP) as a member of the Oska Kintetsu Buffaloes, the Orix Buffaloes, the Yomuri Giants and the Fukoka Softbank Hawks.
In 2010, Powell has posted a 3-3 record with a 5.81 ERA in seven games (six starts) for the Tribe after going 4-7 with a 3.74 ERA in 34 contests for the Indians in 2009.
Powell becomes the first Indianapolis Indians' player to take home an International League weekly award this season. The Tribe saw four players - OF Lastings Milledge, OF/1B Brian Myrow, RHP Eric Hacker and RHP Daniel McCutchen - win an IL award during the 2009 campaign.
