Gladney’s Gashing, Flourishing Fox Leads Somerset to 12-1 Series-Opening Win

The Somerset Patriots rolled to a 12-1 win in the series opener over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ on Tuesday evening. The win kept Somerset 5.0 games back of first-place Reading in the Northeast Division with 29 games remaining. Somerset advanced to 11-8

The Somerset Patriots rolled to a 12-1 win in the series opener over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ on Tuesday evening.

The win kept Somerset 5.0 games back of first-place Reading in the Northeast Division with 29 games remaining. Somerset advanced to 11-8 against the Fisher Cats this season, including a 4-3 record at TD Bank Ballpark. Dating back to 2025, Somerset is 33-10 against New Hampshire.

Somerset jumped out to an 11-0 advantage in the first two innings, highlighted by a five-run first inning and six-run second inning.

Somerset’s five-run first inning saw eight batters come to the plate and DJ Gladney and Coby Morales clobber back-to-back home runs. Gladney and Morales’ back-to-back homers marked the third time Somerset has homered in back-to-back at bats this season and first time since Tyler Hardman and Gladney did it on May 2 vs. Portland. Somerset’s five runs in the first inning marked the Patriots’ most since scoring five runs in the first inning on May 1 vs. Portland. Somerset’s 76 first inning runs rank second in the Eastern League and third in Double-A this season.

In the second inning, the Patriots brought nine batters to the plate, hitting two more homers off the bat of Gladney and Manny Palencia. Somerset’s 11 runs in the first two innings marked a franchise record and were tied for the second-most runs scored by a single team in the first two innings at Double-A this season.

With two homers in the first and second innings, Somerset homered at least two times in multiple innings for the fourth time in franchise history and first time since July 28, 2022 at Richmond. Somerset’s two two-homer innings padded its multi-homer inning total to 12 this season.

With Somerset’s four homers, the Patriots powered their seventh four-home run game (7-0), 19th three-home run game (13-6) and 46th multi-home run game (31-15) this season, surpassing Somerset’s multiple homers in 35 games in 2025. Somerset has smashed homers in four of its last five games. Somerset’s 156 homers this season lead Double-A and rank eighth in MiLB at the time of the game’s conclusion.

RHP Rory Fox (5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K) struck out a Double-A career-high five batters in his second consecutive start with 5.2 IP. Fox tied a career-high with 97 pitches, his most since July 11 vs. Rome. Fox issued two or fewer walks in his 10th consecutive outing dating back to his time with the Renegades. Across his last eight starts dating back to Hudson Valley, Fox has posted a 3.35 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 46 K to 9 BB in 45.2 IP.

Combining for 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of Rory Fox, Somerset’s bullpen has allowed one or fewer runs in five of its last six games.

RHP Kelly Austin (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) posted his sixth consecutive scoreless outing. During that stretch, he’s allowed just four hits in 8.1 IP (.138 BAA). Across his last 18 outings since June 7 at Harrisburg, Austin has posted a 2.38 ERA, 1-0 record, 1.10 WHIP and .179 BAA with 23 K to 10 BB in 22.2 IP.

CF Jace Avina (2-for-5, 2B, RBI, SB) hammered an RBI double in the second inning in his 22nd multi-hit game of the season. Avina improved to a .303/.398/.579 slash line with 3 HR, 10 RBI and 13 XBH in 19 games against the Fisher Cats this season. Avina’s 46 XBH this season lead all Yankees farmhands.

SS Core Jackson (2-for-5, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, SB, R) pummeled a pair of RBI hits and snagged his first Double-A stolen base in his Somerset debut. Jackson notched his first Double-A hit on an RBI single in the second inning, before rocking an RBI triple in the fifth inning to score Cole Gabrielson.

Jackson’s triple marked his Yankees farm system-tying sixth triple of the season. Dating back to his time with Hudson Valley, Jackson has hit safely in six straight games. In that span, he’s slashing .391/.533/.696 with 4 XBH, 2 RBI and three multi-hit games. Jackson joined Fox, Connor McGinnis, Ben Grable and Jack Cebert as the fifth Patriot to debut at Double-A after being selected by the Yankees in the 2025 MLB Draft.

2B Roderick Arias (1-for-4, RBI, SB, HBP, 2 R) punched an RBI single to left field in the first inning. Arias has hit safely in all seven games to start his stint with Somerset. Dating back to his time in Hudson Valley, Arias has hit safely in a season-high 11 straight games. In that span, he’s slashing .386/.426/.545 with 6 XBH, 6 RBI and five multi-hit games.

RF DJ Gladney (2-for-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI) hammered his third multi-home run game of the season and his 11th career multi-home run game. Gladney’s three-run home run in the first inning gave him a career-high 20 homers, before his three-run homer in the second inning marked his 100th career home run and 21st home run this season. Gladney’s two-homer game was the 16th multi-homer game by a Patriot batter this season and first since Miguel Palma’s two-home run game at New Hampshire on July 26. Gladney’s three multi-home run games with Somerset this season are the most among all Patriots.

Gladney extended his on-base streak to 12 games. With hits in 12 games during that stretch, Gladney is slashing .364/.397/.764 with 6 HR, 10 XBH and 20 RBI. With an RBI in nine of his last 12 games, Gladney’s 74 RBI lead the Eastern League and Yankees farm system.

3B Coby Morales (2-for-3, HR, RBI, 2 BB, R) slammed his 19th home run of the season on a solo shot in the first inning as part of his team-leading 28th multi-hit game this season. Morales extended his hit streak to a season-high seven games. In that span, he’s slashing .308/.438/.538 with a HR, 3 XBH and an RBI. During Morales’ nine-game on-base streak, he’s reached safely in 16 of 37 plate appearances (.429 OBP). Morales’ 104 hits through Somerset’s first 109 games of the season rank second in the franchise’s affiliated history.

DH Manny Palencia (1-for-5, HR, RBI, R) blasted a homer in back-to-back games for the first time this season. With homers in three straight series for the first time in his career, Palencia extended his total to a career-high three home runs.

Since the beginning of July, Palencia has eight multi-hit games and is slashing .400/.418/.600 with 3 HR, 9 RBI and 7 XBH in that span. Palencia’s .400 AVG leads all Double-A catchers and ranks second among all Double-A batters with over 65 plate appearances in that stretch.
