Jupiter, FL - Derian Gonzalez tossed seven shutout innings for the second game in a row to lead the Palm Beach Cardinals (31-21) to a 2-0 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (22-31). Gonzalez gave up three hits, walked one and struck out six over the seven frames.
The Cardinals were shut down by Beau Burrows early, until the third inning. Luke Dykstra and Darren Seferina hit back-to-back one out singles, getting Dykstra to third. Tommy Edman brought in the first run on a sacrifice fly to center to give Gonzalez and the Cardinals the one run lead.
In the fourth inning, Chris Chinea led off the inning with a walk. Edmundo Sosa tried to bunt him over and went down as he rolled his ankle on first base, Derian Gonzalez came in to hit for Sosa and struck out on a foul bunt. Dykstra replaced Sosa in the field, causing the Cardinals to lose the DH and revert to National League rules.
Gonzalez kept pitching after his at bat and threw three more scoreless frames, until Estarlin Arias replaced him in the eight. Arias tossed a scoreless eighth, holding on to the Palm Beach shutout.
The Cardinals grabbed an insurance run in the eight as Tommy Edman hit a single and got to second on an error by the centerfielder. He later scored on a Randy Arozarena double down the left field line.
Ramon Santos pitched the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff single to Will Maddox. He got Jose Azocar to fly out for the first out. Santos struck out Wade Hinkle for the second out and Chris Chinea threw out Maddox as he tried to steal to end the game. Santos picked up his first save to preserve the 2-0 victory.
