GreenJackets Fall One Run Short in Second Half Opener

Pair of Unearned Runs Haunt Augusta in Defeat

FAYETTEVILLE, NC: The Augusta GreenJackets (0-1) began the second half of the regular season with a narrow defeat at the hands of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (1-0), 6-5.

The GreenJackets came out hot to start the night by scoring twice in the opening inning with both runs coming in on a two-run single by Brandon Parker to plate Caleb Durbin and Cal Conley to make it 2-0 Augusta.

Fayetteville came through with runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three times on an RBI single by Joey Lopefido and a two-run double by Miguel Palma to give the Woodpeckers the lead at 3-2.

In the third, the GreenJackets snatched the lead back with Brandon Parker scoring two more runs with a double off the top of the wall in left-center that brought in Cal Conley and Geraldo Quintero to make it 4-3 Augusta. Parker would eventually find his way home as he scored on a wild pitch to up the Augusta lead to 5-3.

That score would stay in place for a while as AJ Smith-Shawver held the Woodpeckers off the board after the first inning by tossing five innings in total with nine strikeouts and no walks on just four hits on the mound for the GreenJackets.

With the game still 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Fayetteville took advantage of two throwing errors to manufacture two runs to tie the game at five.

The game would remain tied into the eighth until Miguel Palma hit a solo home run to lead-off the inning to put the Woodpeckers back in front 6-5.

Augusta was unable to rally from there as they were put down in order in the top of the ninth as they came up one run short in the first game of the second half, 6-5.

Christian Mejias (3-1) earned the win by tossing five innings of scoreless relief for the Woodpeckers with James Acuna (1-1) taking the loss for the GreenJackets.

Brandon Parker was the main catalyst offensively for Augusta by driving in a career-high four runs in the defeat, also scoring once in the third inning. Geraldo Quintero and Cal Conley each reached three times in the game while Conley scored twice and stole two bases.

Game five between the GreenJackets and Woodpeckers is Saturday at 5:05 pm with Luis Vargas getting the ball for Augusta against Zack Matthews for the Woodpeckers.
