GreenJackets Hold Off Pelicans to Win Series Opener

Augusta Opens Homestand With Exciting Win Over Myrtle Beach

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (9-14) welcomed the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (13-12) for their final homestand in July and they started it off right by taking down their South Division rivals 5-4 in the opening game.

It was the Pelicans who got on the board first in the second inning on a two-out, RBI single by Felix Stevens to make it 1-0 Myrtle Beach.

The GreenJackets countered with a run of their own in the third inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Stephen Paolini to score Francisco Floyd, evening the game at one apiece.

With the score still tied in the fifth, Augusta broke the stalemate with a big swing off the bat of Adam Zebrowski who sent a three-run homer over the wall in right-center field to push the GreenJackets ahead 4-1.

Sam Strickland kept the Pelicans quiet on Tuesday as the Augusta starter tossed five strong innings on the mound allowing just one run on one hit with five strikeouts as he exited the game in line for another win.

Myrtle Beach wouldn't go down easy as they scored twice in the seventh inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Rivero and an RBI single by Josue Huma to cut the GreenJackets' three-run lead to one as the score was now 4-3.

Augusta would look to get those runs back as they loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with no outs, but following a strikeout and an infield fly, the GreenJackets were on the verge of being sent back with nothing but instead caught a break as Myrtle Beach pitcher, Gregori Montano committed a balk to force in a key insurance run to make it 5-3.

The score would remain 5-3 entering the ninth, but the Pelicans once again did not back down as they quickly manufactured a run on another run producing hit by Felix Stevens to cut their deficit back down to one at 5-4. Tyler Owens would enter to get the final two outs and he'd finish the job by getting a pair of flyouts to secure a 5-4 win for the GreenJackets in the series opener versus Myrtle Beach.

Sam Strickland (3-1) earned his second consecutive winning decision with Tyler Owens (2) earning his second save of the season. Pelican's reliever Yovanny Cabrera (1-2) was saddled with the loss.

Adam Zebrowski provided the biggest hit of the night in the fifth with his three-run homer to help put Augusta over the top, but the offense also produced a notable performance from Brandon Parker who was 2/2 with three walks as he reached a career-high five times while also scoring the eventual winning run in the seventh. Every GreenJacket starter reached base on Tuesday night as the club drew 11 walks en route to the one-run victory.

Game two comes on Wednesday night as Rainiery Rodriguez faces Koen Moreno in his first start for the Pelicans with first pitch set for 7:05 pm at SRP Park.
