GreenJackets Win Game One of Doubleheader; Fall in Game Two
*Augusta and Fredericksburg Split Friday's Doubleheader *
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (6-12) and Fredericksburg Nationals (14-5) squared off in a doubleheader on Friday night at SRP Park with each team taking one game as the GreenJackets won the first matchup and the Nationals winning the second.
In game one, the Fred Nats snagged a first-inning lead on a solo home run by Drew Millas with two outs to take a 1-0 advantage.
But Augusta had an answer in the bottom half of the second as Eliezel Stevens put the GreenJackets on top with a no-doubter over the left field wall to make it a 2-1 lead for Augusta.
They'd add on to that lead in a big way in the fourth as the offense exploded with six runs starting with a two-run single by Braulio Vasquez to score both Adam Zebrowski and Stephen Paolini to push the lead for the GreenJackets to 4-1. Connor Blair followed that with an RBI single to take the lead to 5-1. To cap it off, Kadon Morton launched a tape measure home run deep over the left field wall for a three-run bomb to conclude the frame with Augusta ahead 8-1.
The Fred Nats would score two runs in the top of the fifth to stay in the game, but Augusta added on extra insurance for safe keeping in the sixth on an RBI single by Brandon Parker to extend the edge back to six at 9-3.
The Nationals produced a run in the ninth but it was not nearly enough as the GreenJackets took game one by a score of 9-4.
James Acuña (2-2) earned the win in relief for Augusta with Fredericksburg starting pitcher Andry Lara (2-5) taking the loss.
In game two, the GreenJackets would fall behind again in the opening inning on a two-out RBI single by Brandon Boissiere with the bases loaded to put the Nationals ahead 1-0.
But it would take just one batter in the bottom of the first to even the game as Caleb Durbin drove a leadoff home run out of the park to left field to tie the game at one apiece.
The matchup would remain knotted at one until the fourth when Braulio Vasquez broke the tie with a two-out, RBI double to plate Stephen Paolini and make it 2-1 in favor of the GreenJackets.
Fredericksburg would quickly come back and tie the game in the fifth with an RBI double of their own from Yoander Rivero with two outs as the battle was once again even at two.
However, the Fred Nats would pull away from Augusta in the sixth as the visitors took off for an eight-run inning started by a go-ahead, solo homer by Brandon Boissiere with seven more runs coming in after that to put the GreenJackets in a 10-2 hole they could not dig out of as they would go on to lose by that score.
Jackson Rutledge (3-5) was the winner for Fredericksburg as the starter in game two with Estarlin Rodriguez (0-2) suffering the defeat in relief for Augusta.
The offense had some noticeable performances throughout the doubleheader including Braulio Vasquez who collected his third three-hit performance of the year in game one by going 3/3 with a double and two RBIs. Eliezel Stevens was 2/3 in game one with his fourth multi-hit game in six starts as his first knock being was a long homer in the second inning.
The GreenJackets continue their series with the Fredericksburg Nationals on Saturday with the the16th annual Military Appreciation Night with the White Claw Pregame Concert Series featuring Forest O’Quinn. The homestand concludes on Sunday with Dinosaur night and a Back-to-School Drive with the United Way of the CSRA!
